Cody Jewell Memorial Fund
On September 14, 2010 a ten year-old Hilliard City School student from Ridgewood Elementary, Cody Jewell, was hit by a car waiting for the school bus on Scioto-Darby Creek Road. The first responder and witness to the accident was Mrs. Julie Caserta, a fifth grade teacher at Hoffman Trails Elementary. Julie’s compassion and presence held Cody at the scene. Sadly, this tragic accident took Cody’s life. During the grieving process of this event, many people, like Julie, were struck by the deep faith, commitment to education, and good will of this young man. Taking this unfortunate experience and creating something positive has been a goal for Mrs. Caserta’s for the past year. Julie learned shortly after the accident that even though Cody was young, he was wise beyond his years and understood the value of an education. He was an inspiration and cheerleader for encouraging his mom to go back to school. Mrs. Caserta wants to honor Cody's passion and wisdom in a beneficial legacy. She is creating The Cody Jewell Memorial Scholarship Fund, which will be available to graduating Hilliard seniors and managed by the Hilliard Education Foundation. To get the fund started, Julie needs your help! She has set a personal goal to raise $3,000 by running in her first ever half marathon, October 16th, in honor and support of Cody.
